What's a blue moon

A blue moon is an additional full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year: either the third of four full moons in a season, or a second full moon in a month of the common calendar

👎

The first full moon of the month occurred on 1-2 October, 2020.  This was the Harvest Moon of the Northern Hemisphere, or the full moon around mid-September.  This month will be the second full moon, popularly known as Blue Moon.  It will come on October 31, 2020, which is Halloween night.  The moon will only be blue, but it will be close to a bright red "star" in the sky - not really a star but Mars, a fiery planet, is still at its best!  Don't leave them

According to this definition, the last blue moon - the last time we had another full moon in a calendar month - was March 31, 2018

Blue Moon has another definition.  It may also be the third of four full moons in a single season, with the season between Sankranti and Asyncus.  The next season's Blue Moon will take place on 22 August 2021

In recent years, people have been using the name Blue Moon for these two different moons: one of two full moons in a calendar month, or one of four full moons in the same season

See the moon phase for each day on EarthSky's lunar calendar in 2021.  Order now - they are running fast!  Makes a great gift

One day, you can see a real blue moon in the sky.  Blue moons are rare - not necessarily complete - and slightly larger than 900 nanometers when there are dust or smoke particles in the Earth's atmosphere.  Particles of this size are very useful in scattering red light.  When these particles are present in our air, and the moon shines through them, the moon can appear blue.  For more information about the truly blue moon, click here

Meanwhile, the full moon you will see on October 31, 2020, will not appear blue.  But - as the second full moon in a month - many people call it the Blue Moon.  Nearby will be a bright red object Mars
